Biography*

My father Eric came from England to South Australia in 1923 under a scheme called the Barwell scheme that brought young people to Australia to work on farms, probably due to a shortage of workers following the loss of so many young men in WW1. My father was just 15 when he arrived in Aus. and began work on a remote wheat farm as a virtual slave to a local farmer.

He left as soon as he was able and continued working as a farmer until he left Australia with the armed forces to go to Libya where he was injured, captured and transported to Caserta in Italy where he died. http://www.battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/caserta_war_cemetery.htm gives some info but concentrates mainly on the period after it became an allied headquarters and of course he died before then.²

Biography*

Robert Faulder White's father was a James White (1775 - 1820) better known as Jem White. While coming from a humble background, he was accepted to Christ's Hospital in the same year as an essayist called Charles Lamb and it seems this is where the two of them also got to know Samuel Coleridge (who was a few years older). White went on the create arguably the first advertising agency at 33 Fleet Street, and is, apparently, thought of as the inventor of copywriting. After his early death his son and widow continued to run it and it was known thereafter as "R. F. White & Sons Ltd". Jem White seems to have been a larger than life character, who went about in the guise of Sir John Falstaff, and together with Charles Lamb would host an annual dinner for all the chimney sweep boys in London (referred to in the Essays of Elia by Charles Lamb). Jem White's wife was Margaret Faulder, daughter of Joseph Faulder a successful bookseller (many of his books are still for sale and I believe he became bookseller to George III). Margaret Faulder then remarried to Richard Barker and ended up living in Fitzroy Square (with her first husband she had lived at Burton Cresent, which is now Cartwright Gardens).
