| Biography* | Houghton is a small irregularly-built village, two miles N. by E. of Carlisle. Its township contains 1274 acres, rated at £1795, and in 1831 it had a population of 384 souls. Here are The Knells, a beautiful mansion, the seat of John Dixon, Esq; Houghton Hall, the seat of Peter Jas. Dixon, Esq; and Houghton House, the seat of William Hodgson, Esq., each commanding beautiful views of the vale of Eden and the adjacent country. Near to the village is a neat church, or chapel of ease, built in 1840, chiefly by subscription, of white freestone, from the chalk quarries, near Dalston. It consists of a nave, chancel, and tower, and is capable of seating about 300 persons. John Dixon, Esq. who is the patron, has endowed it with land, yielding £40 a year. The present incumbent is the Rev. John Kitton, M.A. The school, which is contiguous to the church, was rebuilt in 1841, and it is intended to endow it with £25 a year, to be raised by subscription. John Dixon and William Hodgson, Esqrs., are the largest owners of this township. The manor of Houghton and Tarraby was anciently possessed by the Forsters, but was sold to the tenants in 1764.1 |

| Note* |
I am trying to find out more about my 3xgr.grandfather William Marshall who married Sarah Tickner in Godalming on 23 Feb 1818. In the Parish Records the marriage entry states that William Marshall came from Compton. I have plenty of information on the Tickners, but know nothing of William Marshall who seems to have been living in Horsell with his family by 1841.
Benjamin Marshall, son of the above, along with his brother William and Benjamin Wells, came to Australia in 1841 on the "Moffatt" as bounty
emigrants.
Can anyone help me with the parents of Benjamin Wells - James Wells and MaryMarshall who married St. Peters, Woking 17 Feb 1812?
I have wondered if Mary Marshall is related to William Marshall.
The daughter of James and Mary Wells, (another Mary) married Benjamin Marshall in Australia in 1841.
Any information on either the Marshall or Wells families would increase myknowledge by 100%! I can provide plenty of interesting information on the families once they arrived in Australia.3
